Amrit Snan day: crowd safety
How to stay safe at the Nashik Kumbh on Amrit Snan days: when to arrive, crowd rules, river safety in the monsoon, children and elders, and what to do if separated.
Before the day
Arrive early. Reach Nashik at least a day before; roads and trains are packed on snan day.
Make safety cards. One for every child and elder, with photo and family numbers.
Agree a meeting point. One landmark everyone knows, such as a police help desk.
Check official notices. Routes, parking and ghat timings are announced by the Mela authority and police.
On the day
- Ghats are reserved for the akhada processions first; general pilgrims bathe after they finish. Follow police directions on timing.
- Walk with the flow and keep to the left. Never stop on steps, bridges or narrow lanes.
- If the crowd presses, move diagonally towards the edge instead of pushing back.
- Keep children in front of you and hold hands. Elders should avoid the peak hours.
- In the monsoon the river is fast: bathe only inside barricades.
If someone is separated
Stay calm and stay put. Go to the agreed meeting point; don't search the crowd.
Tell the nearest police help desk. Lost-and-found centres make announcements across the Mela.
Call 112. Give a landmark and the person's description.
